If you are building a deck in the City of Edmonton, you may require a deck permit. However, not all decks require a Development Permit or a Building Permit. If you are building a rear deck lower then 24″ in height, uncovered, you do not need to apply for a permit in Edmonton. If you are building a covered deck, a deck that is over 24″ in height or if you are building a deck in the front property, you will then require a Edmonton Development Permit and a Building Permit.
Once you know you will need an Edmonton permit, your deck design will need to conform with the Edmonton deck design guidelines and codes. Not following the design guideline and code will result in a permit disapproval.
Tips:
- Ensure your drawings are detailed and well prepared prior submitting to the City for permits.
- It is important to design your deck’s handrail and guard correctly with the proper height requirements.
- The height of your deck is a very important consideration during your design process.
- A Structural Engineer maybe required if your deck is large and complex.
- A covered deck will most likely require a Structural Engineer.
